Custom Programs are just that - custom.
They all tackle a specific need or challenge faced by a company. Custom Programs can vary widely in timing and content.
- A two-day seminar on negotiating skills
- A one-week program on finance and accounting
fundamentals
- A three-week management development
program where participants live on campus
- A six-month program meeting once each
week to solve a specific business problem
The Action Learning Project
Some of our custom programs are designed
to tackle a current problem faced by a company or its executives.
The cornerstone of these programs is a work project designed
by participants - an action learning project (ALP) - in collaboration
with faculty. ALPs allow participants to apply new knowledge
and skills gained from University of Washington coursework
to accomplish a specific goal at work or to tackle a persistent
problem.
Cultivating Better Managers
Some of our custom programs are broader
management development programs aimed at improving executives'
skills in a wide range of areas. These programs often include
courses, which directly address today's changing marketplace,
such as leadership, financial management, and creating a customer-focused
organization. Some companies choose a residential program
in which participants reside together for the duration of
the course, often in a hotel near campus. Residential programs
can contribute to the corporate agenda by encouraging networking
and team building among participants.
Example of a Three Week Management
Development Program
For over 40 years, the University
of Washington has provided the Boeing Company with a custom
management development program. Participants spend three weeks
on the UW campus; studying systems thinking, lean manufacturing,
design and production and shareholder value (among other topics).
Selected faculty work closely with a design team from Boeing
to ensure that each program serves the immediate needs of
the company.
Partnerships With Industry
At Executive Education, we are always creating
new courses to serve the changing needs of the business community
in Seattle, the Northwest, and the world beyond. More and
more, we are filling a gap in management development opportunities
across an industry, like aerospace and engineering. A recent
leadership development program for physicians state-wide,
designed in conjunction with the Washington State Medical
Association, was so successful that it led to an evening degree
program at the University of Washington.
