Summer Internship Program

Business and community organizations can gain fresh perspectives and new business strategies from UW Foster School students through the Business and Economic Development Center's consulting internship program.

Summer Consulting Internship
BEDC offers a summer consulting internship for undergraduate students. Internships take place in Seattle, Yakima, and Tri-Cities, and each intern works with three small businesses between June and September.

Each business receives approximately 150 hours of consulting services and projects are company-specific. Below is a list of sample projects past students have completed for businesses:

  • Develop a marketing plan for the company, including completion of a SWOT analysis, segmentation, targeting, positioning analysis, marketing mix strategy and short and long term projections.
  • Assist in implementing appropriate accounting systems or financial projections.
  • Operational and organizational management services, including a review of business operations, production processes, and metrics to track their management plan both short and long term.
  • Financial analysis of the company including financial ratios, internal growth rate (IGR) and sustainable growth rate (SGR) Analysis, internal financial analysis and short and long-term projections.

Upon completion of the internship program, and again three months after the end of the program, BEDC evaluates the intern's impact in helping their client companies reach the goals established at the beginning of the summer.

The summer consulting internship is sponsored by DB Squared and Liberty Northwest.

Tribal Enterprise Internships
MBA students spend 12 weeks with a tribal enterprise to conduct research, complete feasibility studies and develop business plans geared toward growing job opportunity for tribal members. Interns work with tribes in Washington and Oregon. Funding for this internship is provided by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Application process for the Tribal Enterprise Internships begins in January or February each year. Interns work from June to September.
